From Sarah -
Community and QuiltingAs members of the CMQG know very well, quiltmaking can be a slow and solitary practice which can sometimes be hard to sustain. Throughout history, quiltmakers have sought out community for support, guidance, and company, and these community groups, formal and informal, have played an important role in the development of the craft. This lecture will examine the relationship of communities and quiltmaking by first considering what being part of a community has meant to quilters historically, and then examining the ways that quilters today define themselves and their work by the communities from which they come, and the communities that they create. Finally, we will look at how quilt communities have helped to present quilts to a broader audience, fostering an understanding of quilting as an important and relevant craft which influences the broader culture outside of the quilting world.
